Dimitrios Kannavos : Professor Gallagher, what first inspired you to found WGES Global™ in 2009, and what was the central vision behind this international initiative?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : WGES Global™ was founded out of both professional experience and a defining realization—that many of the world’s most pressing challenges, particularly at the intersection of environment, public health, and economic stability, were being addressed in isolation rather than through coordinated strategy. Through my work in health, education, and advisory roles across both academic and business environments, I had direct access to senior leaders across sectors government officials, industry executives, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations each working on critical aspects of these issues, but rarely aligned in a single, focused dialogue.
I brought together a group of trusted colleagues and decision-makers and proposed a different kind of platform: one that would not function as a traditional conference, but as a strategically designed, agenda-driven forum where the right people could engage around the right issues at the right time.
That vision led to our first symposium and then another grew to the Philadelphia Convention Center, then Washington DC and New York and others have followed at the same caliber for over 15 years. They have been supported by a broad coalition of partners, including representation from federal, state and local agencies, academia, industry, and government. The level of engagement confirmed that there was a clear demand for a symposium built on substance, access, and outcomes. The value is based on the ability to move ideas into action.
Dimitrios Kannavos : At a time of multiple global crises, why do you believe collaboration among academia, governments, industry, and nonprofit institutions is more essential than ever?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : The challenges we face today are interconnected and increasingly complex. Issues such as public health, energy, sustainability, and economic resilience cannot be addressed effectively within isolated systems. Collaboration across academia, government, industry, and nonprofit institutions allows for a more comprehensive approach—aligning knowledge, innovation, policy, and implementation to develop solutions that are both practical and scalable.
Dimitrios Kannavos : In your view, what are the most urgent international challenges today in the areas of sustainable development, public health, and economic resilience?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : The most urgent challenges exist at the intersection of sustainability, public health, and economic stability. We are seeing increasing strain on environmental systems, evolving public health risks, and the need for economies that can adapt to rapid change while maintaining resilience. These challenges are interconnected, not independent. Addressing them requires integrated strategies that consider environmental impact, human well-being, and economic sustainability together.
Dimitrios Kannavos : WGES Global™ places strong emphasis on cross-sector dialogue. How can this approach lead to real, practical solutions rather than remaining only at the level of discussion?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : WGES Global™ is intentionally structured to move beyond discussion. We curate participants who are not only subject-matter experts, but individuals in positions to influence decisions and implementation. The agenda is designed to foster meaningful exchange, identify alignment, and support collaboration that continues beyond the symposium. Professor Robert J. Gallagher : In the context of WGES Global™, we focus less on defining leadership in the abstract and more on how leadership is demonstrated through action—particularly in addressing complex challenges in sustainability, public health, and economic resilience. What we see consistently is that progress is achieved when individuals and institutions are willing to engage across disciplines, share knowledge, and contribute to solutions that extend beyond a single sector or perspective. The symposium is designed to support that kind of engagement—where leadership is reflected in collaboration, alignment, and the ability to move ideas into meaningful outcomes.
Dimitrios Kannavos : How important is higher education in preparing the next generation to respond to the demands of a rapidly changing global environment?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : Higher education plays a critical role in preparing future leaders to think critically, adapt to change, and engage with complex global challenges. Universities are both centers of knowledge and platforms for innovation. When connected with real-world application, they become powerful contributors to global progress.

Dimitrios Kannavos : The upcoming international gathering of WGES Global™ in Athens represents an important milestone. What is the broader message and strategic significance of this event?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : The Athens symposium does represent a major milestone. We are honored to be hosted in Athens. It reflects both the growth of the platform overseas and the continued importance of bringing together cross-sector expertise to address shared challenges in sustainability, public health, and economic resilience. Greece is increasingly recognized for its leadership in sustainable development and the circular economy, with ongoing advancements in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and national initiatives focused on waste reduction and circularity across key sectors such as manufacturing and tourism. Combined with its academic institutions, historic significance, and global accessibility, Greece provides a highly relevant and meaningful setting for our platform and all participants.
Dimitrios Kannavos : What do you hope will emerge from the collaboration between the United States, Europe, and the wider international community through this meeting in Athens?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : We hope to see the development of new partnerships with projects, stronger alignment across sectors, exchanges and initiatives that continue beyond the symposium. The goal is sustained momentum—where dialogue leads to measurable outcomes and continued collaboration.
Dimitrios Kannavos : What role do you believe Greece can play in this new era of international dialogue, innovation, and sustainable development?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : Greece is uniquely positioned as a bridge between regions and ideas. Its strategic location, academic institutions, and growing focus on innovation and sustainability make it an important contributor to global dialogue.
We are working closely not only with our U.S. team and leaders in the United States, but also with our partner university leadership in Greece, the University of West Attica and its School of Public Health, as well as business and organizational leaders in Greece who are collectively playing an important role in helping to shape and support this initiative.
Equally important is the role of media. Strategic media partnerships, including with Hellenic News Network, have always been vital to WGES Global™ in effectively communicating its mission, expanding its reach, and ensuring that the dialogue and outcomes extend well beyond the symposium itself.
This level of collaboration reflects what is needed moving forward—alignment across institutions, sectors, and platforms.
Dimitrios Kannavos : After decades of academic, advisory, and international leadership, what do you consider the most important legacy you hope to leave through your work?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : The legacy we hope to leave is one of meaningful and lasting impact—creating a platform that brings together a diverse and highly engaged community of innovators, educators, industry leaders, policymakers, public health experts, and those advancing emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
This work also carries a personal significance. Having experienced firsthand how environmental conditions can affect public health within our own family, it reinforces the importance of connecting knowledge with action. Over the years, many individuals who have been part of WGES Global™ have shared their own experiences, innovations, and advancements—whether in energy, public health, technology, education, or cross-sector collaboration. What has been most meaningful is seeing how those ideas, connections, and initiatives have continued beyond the symposium and contributed to progress in tangible ways.
Because ultimately, meaningful progress does not come from a single moment—it is built over time. While WGES Global™ continues to build momentum, foster collaboration and drive progress, then it has achieved its purpose.
Dimitrios Kannavos : . What message would you like to share with young scholars, researchers, and future leaders who aspire to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable, and more cooperative world?
Professor Robert J. Gallagher : Remain curious, stay committed to learning, and understand the importance of collaboration in all endeavors. The challenges ahead will require not only knowledge, but also the ability to work across disciplines and perspectives. Progress is built through shared effort—and future leaders will play a critical role in shaping that path forward.
I have great hope for the future, because the next generation of leaders is entering a world that is more connected, more informed, and more innovative than ever before. They are exposed to global perspectives, emerging technologies, and new ways of thinking that allow them to approach challenges with both creativity and purpose.
What is especially encouraging is their willingness to collaborate, to question existing models, and to seek solutions that are both forward-thinking and responsible. When supported by strong education, mentorship, and opportunity, they have the potential not only to respond to the challenges ahead—but to redefine how we approach them.
