Kevin Bacon and Family Bring Family Movie to Karlovy Vary

The 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival once again confirmed its position as one of Europe's premier film events, welcoming internationally acclaimed filmmakers, actors, producers and thousands of cinema enthusiasts to the famous Czech spa town. Alongside a rich international program -which also included several Greek productions and filmmakers - one of this year's most anticipated appearances was that of Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick and their son, musician, composer and actor Travis Bacon, who arrived to present their latest horror-comedy film, Family Movie.

As a photographer covering the festival for Hellenic Media Group, I had the opportunity to attend both the short media session and the screening of the film in the Great Hall of Hotel Thermal, the festival's iconic main venue.

Before the screening, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick and Travis Bacon met members of the press during a red carpet media session. While Kevin Bacon is, of course, one of Hollywood's most recognizable actors, the interviews quickly revealed that Family Movie is exactly what its title suggests - not only on screen, but behind the scenes as well.

The project became a true family collaboration. Kevin and Kyra both appear in the film alongside their son Travis Bacon, while their daughter, actress Sosie Bacon, also plays one of the roles, although unfortunately she was unable to attend the Karlovy Vary premiere. Listening to the three family members discuss the project together, it was evident that they weren't simply promoting another film - they were sharing an experience they had created as a family.

One particularly memorable moment came when the family greeted the audience in Czech during their stage appearance before the screening. Their pronunciation may not have been perfect, but the effort was met with warm laughter and enthusiastic applause from the audience - a small gesture that instantly created a connection with the local crowd.

Following the presentation, the Great Hall filled to capacity as festival guests gathered for the screening of Family Movie. Watching the film in Karlovy Vary's largest cinema, together with its cast and filmmakers, created the kind of atmosphere that only a major international festival can offer.

Without revealing too much, Family Movie successfully combines horror and dark comedy while exploring family relationships in an unconventional way. The film constantly shifts between humor and suspense, keeping the audience engaged while allowing each member of the Bacon family to showcase their own artistic contribution.

Away from the cinema, Kevin Bacon proved exactly why he has remained one of Hollywood's most respected actors for decades. Despite an exceptionally busy schedule filled with interviews and media commitments, he remained approachable, patient and generous with both journalists, photographers and festival guests. Throughout the press session, Kevin, Kyra and Travis treated every interviewer with genuine attention, whether speaking to major international broadcasters or smaller media outlets.

As photographers, we often search for authentic moments rather than perfectly posed images, and the Bacon family offered plenty of those. Between interviews there were spontaneous smiles, quiet conversations and genuine family interactions that revealed a warmth often hidden behind the glamour of red carpets.

For me personally, one unexpected highlight came at the end of the media session when Kevin Bacon kindly agreed to a quick selfie after the interview. It lasted only a few seconds, but it became one of those unforgettable festival memories that every photographer hopes for - not because it was a celebrity selfie, but because it reflected the openness and professionalism he had shown throughout the evening.

One of the greatest strengths of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is its ability to create meaningful encounters between filmmakers, journalists and audiences. Beyond the premieres and awards, it offers opportunities to experience cinema in a more personal way, allowing conversations to continue long after the cameras stop flashing.

Leaving Hotel Thermal that evening with memory cards full of photographs and a notebook full of observations, I couldn't help but feel that Family Movie had found exactly the right place for its European presentation. Between thoughtful discussions, genuine humor and an appreciative audience, the Bacon family delivered not only a memorable screening but also one of the festival's most engaging appearances.

For a photographer, those are often the moments worth capturing most.
